Packaging that actually sells on shelf

On a shelf, a pack has about a second to be noticed and a few more to be understood. The designs that win are rarely the busiest. They are the ones that make five decisions well.

The five

One clear thing first: the product name or the product itself, readable from arm's length. A colour the category isn't using, so the pack stands apart from its neighbours rather than blending into them. A front panel that says what the product is in plain words, because nobody turns a pack around to find out. Materials and finish that match the price, since a premium product in a flimsy pack undercuts itself. And a shape or detail that survives being photographed badly, because much of the time the pack is seen on a phone, not a shelf.

Test it where it will live

Print a mock-up and put it next to the real competitors, on a real shelf if you can. Step back three metres. If you can't find it, or can't tell what it is, no amount of detail on the back will help. Fix the front first.
