Why brand strategy must come before design

A logo can't fix a positioning problem. Here's the order we run every engagement.

Why brand strategy must come before design

Most brands come to us asking for a new look. A fair number of them actually need a new position. The difference matters, because a beautiful identity built on a vague idea of who the brand is for will look great in the deck and do very little in the market.

Strategy is the brief for design

Before anyone opens a design tool, we want three things written down in plain language: who the brand is for, what it does for them that the alternatives don't, and how it should feel when they meet it. Those three lines are the brief. Every visual decision afterwards is either serving them or getting in the way.

This isn't a long process. For a small business it can be a two-hour workshop and a one-page summary. But it is the step that turns taste into judgement: with the position written down, we can say why one direction is right and another is merely nice.

What changes when you do it in this order

Fewer revision rounds, because the feedback has something to be measured against. Stronger consistency, because the position tells the team what to do in situations the guidelines never anticipated. And a website, ad account and photo library that all pull in the same direction, because they were all briefed from the same page.
